Efforts in Onboarding Pay Off in Retention

Recruiting talented individuals for your business is just one aspect of the hiring process. Although it is important, recruitment can only be successful when efforts are made toward integrating new employees into a corporate culture, once hiring is complete.

While hiring can be quite an extensive and costly process many employers do not realize that making an employee feel welcomed and familiar with a new environment can go a long way toward contributing to an employee and organization’s success.

No First Day Drama

Remember the first day of school and the terror and panic of being completely lost and unsure of what was going on?  Well if you answered yes, chances are you know how a new employee can feel in the midst of a chaotic and surreal experience.

While, the stakes are much higher than they were back on the first day of school. Just like a first day, a new employee knows that any wrong move can lead to an embarrassing situation.  Orienting a new employee is critical.  Embarrassment can be overcome, but the implication of a lack company preparation can form a much stronger impression on a new employee.

Companies that neglect to provide their employees with a positive orientation indirectly communicate messages about the importance of new employees to an organization.  Think of onboarding as the first of many steps wherein a new employee is welcomed into a family. A poor reception can be the cause of unnecessary strain and failed communication later in the future.

Curbing Turnover

Successful onboarding techniques provide new employees with every avenue needed to bring success to a company.  They familiarize employees with the company culture quickly allowing them to settle in and become productive employees sooner. Introducing them to critical staff, ensuring their awareness of key protocols and letting existing staff know of their arrival and workplace needs should be top priority for every employer.

The goal of good onboarding should be to get new employees acquainted with and enthusiastic about their future with a company.  The impressions generated during this process can color future employee engagement with a company.

Onboarding is not only a part of good HR practices but it is a part of what makes a business successful.  All business start with people and knowing how to manage talented individuals is a key indicator of competitive businesses.  Overwhelming a new employee can discourage them from taking a job seriously or even staying on.  Although high turnover rates place strain on a company’s productivity they are avoidable.

Account for Human Nature

Let’s not forget that employees are human and they share the same basic instinct we all have, to feel a sense of belonging and ease in a new environment.

The key to onboarding is understanding that from the moment a potential employee signs on to your company, you start creating a relationship with that employee.  Building loyalty and commitment in an employee demands considerable effort at the beginning of recruitment, when perceptions are still malleable.

A Moment of Disengagement

Every employee goes through a time when they experience a devastating blow to expectations.  It is the process of mentally and emotionally disengaging and it occurs when an employee starts to question their reasons for staying with an organization.  Whatever the root causes of a loss in interest in one's work it has profound effects on a new employee’s decision to leave an organization.

Recent statistics indicate that the primary reasons employees leave a new job has to do with feeling that they are not given opportunities to grow and challenge themselves.  Investing in a desire for your employees to succeed can only impress success on your organization.  Promoting an atmosphere that says, “we want to see you be successful” provides employees with the motivation needed to want to make a company look its very best.
